The room behind your attention
There is a room in every house that nobody shows to guests. It holds the half-finished letters, the books we pretend to have read, the chair where we sit when we can't sleep. I have come to believe that attention works the same way: what we show the world is the front room, and what we actually become is decided in the back.
We are told that attention is a currency, something to spend wisely or to protect from thieves. But a currency is something you give away. Attention is closer to a room you live in. You furnish it with whatever you look at long enough.
So the question is not how to focus better. It is: what kind of room are you building, one glance at a time?
